No. 20 Central Sweeps Statesmen Saturday Afternoon

Fayette, Mo. - The No. 20 Central Methodist Women's Volleyball program completed its second-straight sweep of the weekend, defeating William Penn in straight sets 25-15, 25-14, and 25-14. 

The Eagles improve to 8-5 and 2-1 in conference play, while William Penn drops to 7-9 and 1-2 in Heart action. 

CMU overcame a slow start that saw them trailing 4-2 in the first set. Central would rattle of six straight points to take a 10-4 lead, before stretching out their lead to double-digits to cruise to a 25-15 win in set one. 

Set two started more favorably for CMU, as the Eagles jumped out to a 13-4 lead and never looked back. It marked CMU's best set offensively, as the Eagles hit .458 while committing just two errors. 

Trailing 2-0 in the match, the Statesmen battled back in set three, keeping even with Central at 9-9 through the first 18 points.

However, Central would use a 10-2 scoring run to take an 19-11 lead in the match. The Eagles held WPU to just .172 hitting in the third set to come away with a double-digit victory in the set and a 3-0 sweep in the match. 

Senior Callie Henson led Central's offensive attack with 11 kills on 18 swings. In addition, the Jefferson City native tallied four digs and three blocks. Annabelle Maassen also had a productive afternoon, recording eight kills on 14 swings in addition to six blocks and five digs. 

The duo of Joana Milho and Morgan LeBlanc each chipped in seven kills while LeBlanc added four digs. 

Gabi Owczarek dished out a team-best 17 assists followed by Ryleigh McBurney with 14. Senior libero Krystal Brauner led the defensive effort with 10 digs. 

As a team, Central finished the afternoon hitting .376 while committing just eight total errors. The Statesmen strugged throughout the match, hitting .111 and committing 17 errors. 

Central hits the road for a Tuesday night matchup against rival Missouri Valley College Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. in Marshall, Mo.
