Marshall, Mo. - The (RV) Central Methodist Men's soccer team was looking to remain perfect on the season as they traveled to Marshall, Missouri to face what would be their toughest challenge so far in No. 11 Missouri Valley College Tuesday night.
The Eagles fell to the Vikings by a narrow margin, 1-0.
In the first half of action, both sides had fair spells of possession but limited opportunities to open up the scoring, as the defense for both sides proved to be too dominant.
The Vikings capped off the first half with six shots, only two of which troubled Eagles' goalkeeper Niccolo Cabras, who safely secured both shots on frame.
Central finished with two shots on target themselves and four total shots in the first half.
With both squads making adjustments at the break, the match was still very level as defense continued to prevail. The Vikings just outshot Central in the second half, 9-8.
But most importantly for the home side, they were able to put one of those shots in the back of the net and take a late 1-0 lead.
With two minutes to play before the final whistle, Sam Green of Missouri Valley scored to push Missouri Valley out in front.
After the Eagles tried pushing bodies forward to get a late equalizer, the final whistle blew and Central would come up just short of an upset bid.
With this, the Eagles now stand at 7-1-0 overall with a 1-1 mark in conference. They will enjoy a couple days off before returning home Monday, Sept. 23, welcoming Graceland University to Davis Field.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
