Central Places Sixth at Heart Championships

Oskaloosa, Iowa - The Central Methodist Men's Wrestling team posted a sixth place finish at the Heart of America Championships this past weekend in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The Eagles tallied 77 team points, behind Baker who finished fifth with 89. Grand View won the tournament for the ninth consecutive year with 212 total points.

Graceland placed second with 145.8 points, followed by Missouri Valley (110 points), and Dickinson State (99 points).

Individually, Central had three grapplers land in the top four of their respective weight classes, including a second place standing for James Griffin at 157 pounds.

Griffin punched his ticket to the championship match with decisive victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Despite falling to Grand View's Dylan Whitt by a 3-0 decision in the final, Griffin made history by becoming the first conference in program history.

Freshman Roman Garcia and junior Cameron Cornman placed fifth at the 165 and 197 pound weight class respectively.

Heavyweights Austin Foye and Garine Gibson each battled their way back in the consolation bracket to square off in the third place match. Foye earned the narrow 1-0 decision over his teammate to secure a podium finish.

Both Griffin and Foye earned Heart All-Conference honors for their placing at the tournament (second and third team).

Central will next turn its attention to the NAIA National Championships, set to begin Friday, March 1 in Park City, Kansas.

The Eagles will wait to see which grapplers have qualified for nationals, as the list will be announced by the national office Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 5:00 p.m. (CST).
