Fayette, Mo. - The Central Methodist men's basketball team secured a big-time 93-87 victory over Peru State College Saturday night inside Puckett Field House.
Central improves to 8-1 and 4-1 in the Heart of America while the Bobcats fall to 7-2 and 3-2 in conference action.
It was a back and forth affair in the first half that saw Central trail by just one at 36-35 entering the halftime break. The Eagles continued to trail in the second half, as Peru State led by as many as 12 points with just eight minutes left.
Over the next two and a half minutes, Central outscored the Bobcats 13-2 to come within one at 72-71. The Eagles grabbed their first lead of the half on a made three from Everett Stubblefield with 3:52 remaining.
Peru State stayed within striking the distance, and answered Central's three with a two-point basket at the 3:35 mark. A three from Trey Sinegal with 2:27 remaining put Central back out in front.
CMU never trailed again, as they converted eight-straight free throws down the stretch to hold on for the six-point victory.
Five Eagles landed in double figures include four of the starting five. TreVon Smith led the way with 22 points on eight-of-18 shooting from the floor.
Stubblefield followed with 20 points in addition to six rebounds, two assists, and a block. Peter Turay tallied a double-double with 19 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Isaiah May nearly joined Turay with a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds paired with four assists and two blocks.
Singel tallied 11 points in 17 minutes coming off the bench.
Both teams were nearly identical in both shooting percentage from the field and the free throw line. The difference in the game came on the glass, as Central grabbed 46 rebounds compared to 35 for Peru State.
The Eagles head out on the road to face MidAmerica Nazarene Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Olathe, Kan.
