Eagles Earn Two Individual Podium Finishes; Place Fifth at Heart Championships

Oskaloosa, Iowa - The Central Methodist Women's Wrestling team competed in the 2024 Heart of America Women's Wrestling Conference Championships this past weekend in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The event, hosted by William Penn University, featured all eight schools in a double-elimination bracket-style tournament. Wrestlers who finished first, second, or third in their weight classes were named Heart All-Conference performers.

The Eagles finished the tournament with 80 points to place fifth as a team. Grand View won the team title with 185 points followed by William Penn (171.5), Missouri Valley (137.5), and Baker (101).

Central garnered two podium finishes in juniors Nonnie Justice and Lillian Gough. After receiving a bye in the first round, Justice rattled off two straight victories to punch her ticket to the 130-pound championship match. She would ultimately fall to Devin Patton of William Penn in the title bout to earn a runner-up finish.

Gough also received a bye into the quarterfinals of the 136-pound bracket, where she then defeated Lindsey Anderson of Dickinson State by Tech Fall, 10-0. In the semifinals, Gough fell to Andrea Schlabach of Grand View in a tough 6-2 decision. She battled back in the consolation side of the bracket to secure a spot in the third-place match.

Gough earned a gutsy victory over Aniseta Acosta of Missouri Valley, pinning Acosta at the 5:49 mark to finish third and earn a spot on the podium.

Allison Hynes finished fourth at 123 pounds while Emma Cole placed fifth in the 155-pound weight class.

Central will turn its attention the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championships, set to take place March 8-9 in Jamestown, N.D.
