Lawrence, Kan. - The No. 2 Central Methodist Women's Basketball program earned its first win of 2023-24, defeating Haskell Indian Nations University, 89-63, Tuesday night in Lawrence, Kan.
The Eagles improve to 1-1 on the early season, while the Fighting Indians fall to 1-3.
Central strugged early to find an offensive rhythm, as the end of the first quarter saw both teams tied at 15-15. A 24-point second quarter saw Central pull out in front at halftime, 39-31.
The Fighting Indians could not overcome Central's third quarter dominance, as the Eagles went on to earn the 26-point victory.
Three Eagles landed in double figures, led by B'Aunce Carter who tallied 17 points on 75-percent shooting from the floor. The native of Belleville, Ill. nearly earned a double-double with eight rebounds while also adding two steals.
Zutorya Cook stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Hayley Berfield was the final Eagle to land in double figures with 14 points while adding a team-high seven assists, and three steals.
Sharay Trotter finished the evening with nine points while matching Cook with seven rebounds. Tynesha Parnell tallied nine points in just four minutes off the bench.
As a team, Central shot a solid 50.7-percent from the floor compared to just 35.4-percent for Haskell. The Eagles won the battle of the boards, 43-25, which included 17 offensive rebounds. In addition, CMU forced 26 turnovers on 17 steals.
The Eagles continue non-conference action against Sterling College Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2:00 p.m. in Sterling, Kansas.
