Eagles outlast No. 4 Oklahoma Wesleyan in double overtime

Eagles outlast No. 4 Oklahoma Wesleyan in double overtime

Bartlesville, Okla. – The No. 1 Central Methodist men's soccer team defeated No.4 Oklahoma Wesleyan by a score of 3-2 in a double overtime thriller Saturday afternoon in Bartlesville, Okla.

Despite trailing most of the game, the Eagles notched their 15th win of the season, pushing their record to 15-1 overall. OKWU falls to 13-2-1.

"We need to come out a bit stronger and sharper at the beginning of games," said Head Coach Alex Nichols. "We are a bit disappointed in a few lackadaisical unsafe choices that cost us today, and we need to be sharper in practice from here on out to prevent those things from happening. Practice translates to games and attention to detail in practice starts with me. We need to get better."

Oklahoma Wesleyan was fast to get on the score sheet, scoring in the fourth minute of the game. Both teams had chances to capitlize in front of goal but weren't able to score. CMU finished the half with four shots and one on goal, while OKWU finished with five shots and two on frame.

Less than a minute into the second half, Clayton Duarte tied the game for the Eagles with a beautiful shot in the upper left corner past the keeper. Both teams remained deadlocked for the next eight minutes, before OKWU scored their second goal to regain the lead. In the 72nd minute, Marcos German took a corner kick that found Tom Irion in the box, who headed the ball in goal to bring the Eagles even once again at 2-2.

The game headed to overtime after regulation finished 2-2. Carlos Scheckermann provided the game winning goal in the 105th minute of play off a corner to give Central a thrilling 3-2 victory.

"To see our players battle back after conceding an early goal was special to watch," added coach Nichols. "We deserved an equalizer but unfortunately, we conceded again. To see our players rally and stay the course only to equalize again showed a lot of character and what our team is about. Our team fought very hard today and staying together when it gets tough is what makes champions. I am proud of our players for staying together as a unit and finishing the job with a hard fought 3-2 result. Anyone who watched our game saw two high level teams competing."

Duarte and Irion led the team with two shots and one goal each. Scheckermann added one shot which found the back of the net and the game winner. Christian Sanchez, Billy Nzojyibwami and Niels Zachriat all added one shot.

Stefano Camerlengo played a full game and collected two saves to earn his 13th win.

"We have a lot of respect for OKWU and what they are capable of on the field. We must use the good and bad of this game to help us get better. My staff and I believe in our players and we know they will stay motivated to get better as individuals and most importantly, as a team. We need to heal up and then get back after it as we have another tough opponent coming up in Western Illinois who just beat a ranked NCAA DI team twice

The Eagles will be back on the field to play NCAA Division I member Western Illinois Sunday, March 28 at 1:00 p.m. in Macomb, Ill.
