No. 1 Central picks up road victory over Baker on Halloween night

Baldwin City, Kan. - The No. 1 Central Methodist men's soccer team defeated Heart rival Baker University, 4-1 Saturday night in Baldwin City, Kan.

The Eagles keep their perfect record intact at 8-0, while Baker falls to 5-6. Tonight's victory marks Central's third straight win over the Wildcats, dating back to the 2018 season.

The first half was controlled by the Central offense, recording 10 shots compared to just two for Baker. It appeared both teams would enter halftime scoreless, before Tom Irion headed a ball in off a corner kick from Guzman Pery with just seconds remaining in the first half, giving Central a 1-0 lead.

CMU continued to press in the second half, posting 12 total shots. Billy Nzojyibwami pushed the Eagles' lead to 2-0 on a rebounded ball in the 64th minute. Two and a half minutes later, Christian Sanchez found the back of the net for the Eagles' third goal of the evening on the assist from Isaac Johnson. Marcos German solidified the win for CMU with a goal in the 70th minute.

The Wildcats cut the lead to 4-1 with a score from Mohamet Cisse in the 89th minute, but could not complete the comeback as the Eagles prevailed for their eighth win of the year.

Overall, the CMU offense collected 22 shots with 10 on goal, compared to Baker's four with two on goal. Nzojyibwami led the offense with five shots taken and two coming on frame. Sanchez and Carlos Scheckermann each recorded three shots, while Sanchez picked up his fourth goal in as many matches.

Freshman goalkeeper Stefano Carmelengo played all 90 minutes between the posts, picking up his seventh win of the 2020 season.

Central will next travel to Culver-Stockton College to face the Wildcats Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 5:30 p.m. in Canton, Mo.
