Eagles shutout Evangel, 9-0 on senior night

Fayette, Mo. – The No. 1 ranked Central Methodist men's soccer team defeated Evangel University by a score of 9-0 Wednesday night at Davis Field. Prior to the start of the match, the program recognized seniors Jonathan GibulaHarry Porritt and Guzman Pery as part of senior night.

With the win, the Eagles keep their record at a perfect 5-0 overall and in conference play, while Evangel falls to 1-8 and 0-7 in Heart action. Central has scored nine goals in each of its past two wins against Clarke and the Crusaders.

10 minutes into the game, Mark Csongradi suffered a foul inside the box, and senior Guzman Pery converted on the penalty kick to give CMU a 1-0 lead. In the 14th minute, Marcos German scored an outstanding Olympic goal on a corner kick, giving CMU a 2-0 advantage. The Eagles entered halftime with the scoreline, 2-0, in favor of Central.

The CMU offense exploded in the second half, scoring seven goals. The Eagles collected their third goal after Hunter Gilliam crossed a ball that landed at the feet of Billy Nzojyibwami, who fired the ball past the keeper for his first goal of the evening.

An own goal by the Crusaders pushed CMU's lead to 4-0, followed by Carlos Scheckermann, who scored his second goal of the year on the assist from Pery. Victor Luengo joined the scoring festivities with his first goal of 2020, with Isaac Johnson assisting. With less than ten minutes remaining, Niels Zachriat crossed a ball to Nzojyibwami, who came flying into the box to fire the ball past the keeper to extend the lead to 7-0.

Not long after, a throw-in from Jayton Johnson saw the ball land at the feet of Gibula, who slipped the ball in the back of the net for his first score as an Eagle. The last goal of the evening began with Pery, who played a ball into the box and found Oscar Fleten, putting the ball in goal after a deflection.

Senior Harry Porritt played all 90 minutes in goal for the Eagles, collecting one save. Guzman Pery finished the game with one goal, one assist, and seven shots with four being on goal. Billy Nzojyibwami recorded three shots, three on goal, with two finding the back of the net. As a team, CMU collected 29 shots and 17 on goal, while the defense held the Crusaders to just two shots and one on frame.

The Eagles will next host William Penn Saturday, Oct. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at Davis Field.
