New Orleans, La. - A stellar week of recognition continues for junior middle distance runner Dayana Montengro, as she was named the NAIA Women's Indoor Athlete of the Week by the USTFCCCA Tuesday.
It marks the first time an athlete from CMU has been named National Athlete of the Week during the indoor season by the Association.
Montengro earned the honor after after being tabbed the Heart Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the third time this season Monday.
The junior from Cali, Colombia put herself in elite company at the Northwest Missouri Bearcat Invite this past weekend, breaking broke both the program and meet record in the 600-yard run.
She ran the event in 1:22.84, rebreaking her mark by more than a second and hitting the NAIA 'A' Standard for qualification for the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships.
Additionally, Montenegro broke the school record in the 400m run, a mark held for more than 20 years by CMU Hall of Famer Daniela Georgieva. Montenegro ran the 400 in 56.90 seconds, hitting the 'A' standard to qualify for nationals.
Her 600 time is the best by an NAIA athlete since 2016 and ranks 17th among all collegians on all tracks this season.
