
Fayette, Mo. - The Central Methodist Baseball team saw its season come to an end in the Opening Round of the NAIA National Tournament this week in the Fayette Bracket.
After winning its first game against Tabor Monday, the Eagles suffered a 10-8 loss to eventual Opening Round Champion Hope International Tuesday.
Central then moved to the elimination side of the bracket, falling to Tabor College Wednesday, 15-4 to bring its season to a close.
Against Hope International, the Eagles found themselves trailing the Royals 6-2 after three and a half innings. An RBI double from Zeb Wede in the bottom of the fourth cut the deficit in half. HIU pushed its lead to four after a two-run home run in the fifth.
Central kept battling, as a Tanner Sears' ground out with the bases loaded plated Diego Da Rin in the fifth. CMU added a pair of runs in the sixth, as David Soriano doubled to left to score Jeremy Conforti, followed by an RBI double from Valentin Cerna Jr. to score Da Rin.
With a three-run sixth, Central trailed just 8-7 in the later stages of the game. Hope would stretch its lead to three with runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
CMU scored its eighth and final run on a ground out from Cerna Jr. to score Nichols. Central was unable to add any more runs, as Hope went on to earn the two-run victory.
The Eagles plated their eight runs on 10 hits, but left 14 runners on base.
Against the Bluejays Wednesday, Central was unable to contain one of the top offenses in the NAIA. Tabor scored 15 runs on 15 hits, including a seven-run seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
The Eagles scored its four runs in the ninth inning on a two-run home run from Carlos Negron, and a two-run double from Da Rin.
Central concludes its season with a 44-11 overall record and its fourth straight appearence in the NAIA National Tournament.
