Eagles Fall to Vikings in Thrilling Heart Championship Match

Eagles Fall to Vikings in Thrilling Heart Championship Match

Fayette, Mo. - The No. 1 seeded Central Methodist Women's Soccer team fell to No. 2 seeded Missouri Valley College in a thrilling Heart Tournament Championship match by a final score of 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Davis Field.

The Eagles are now 17-2-1, while the Vikings improve to 15-4-2.

Similar to the semifinal, the Eagles found themselves trailing in the first six minutes on a freekick. The ball curled into the upper corner of the net, giving MVC an early 1-0 lead.

CMU readjusted in the second half, and freshman Paula Castro put Central on the board on a freekick from 20 yards out to tie the match at 1-1 in the 48th minute of play.

The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the 72nd minute. Castro found freshman Delia Letelier in the middle of the field, and from 30 yards out, the Oslo, Norway native fired a shot which found the top left corner of the net for the score. It marked Letelier's first-career goal as an Eagle.

The Vikings responded almost instantly and tied the match less than three minutes at 2-2. MVC scored the game winner in the 85th minute, making the final score 3-2 in favor of the Vikings.

As a team, Central tallied 14 total shots with eight of them coming on frame. The Vikings recorded nine shots with six coming on goal.

Castro led the way for CMU, recording three shots including a goal and an assist. Alicia Zamora, Lacey Ann Murray, Mariana Barreto, and Kirstine Lykke all finished the afternoon with two shots apiece.

Central will turn its attention to the NAIA National Tournament set to take place Nov. 16-18 at various campus sites around the country.

The Eagles will find out their opponents during the NAIA Women's Soccer selection show, set to premier on the NAIA Youtube page, Monday, Nov. 12 at 12:00 p.m.
