Cedar Rapids, Iowa - The No. 8 Central Methodist Women's Soccer team opened conference play with a 2-0 shut out of the Mount Mercy Mustangs Saturday afternoon in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Eagles improve their overall record to 5-1-1 and 1-0-0 in the Heart, while Mount Mercy falls to 2-2-2 and 0-1-0 in conference play.
Central tallied both of its goals in the final 17 minutes of the first half. Following a foul inside the box, sophomore forward Kirstine Lykke converted the penalty kick to give CMU a 1-0 lead. It marked Central's fourth-straight game in which they scored on a PK.
CMU's second a final goal of the afternoon came in the 40th minute, as Abigal Crispell scored off the assist from Lauren Berger.
Central's defense held Mount Mercy without a shot through the duration of the match, going on to earn the 2-0 shutout.
CMU's offense rolled from start to finish, firing off 21 shots including 10 on frame. Lykke led the way with four total shots, while Paula Castro and Andrea Jiminez each tallied three.
Candela Blanco Esteban earned her third win of the year as goalkeeper, playing all 90 minutes.
Central returns home to host Baker University Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 5:00 p.m. at Davis Field.
